The Lobdell Tree-Planting Song
My in-laws (Lobdells) and I recently planted 135 baby trees. Planting a baby bare-root tree requires digging a hole, then putting most of the dirt back in and stomping on it… and THEN you plant the tree. After several hours of this activity, I made up a song, to the tune of the Mexican Hat Dance. I believe I stole a couple of lines from Alan Sherman, for which I apologize. Since I am just about to launch my serialized Gazette story about a landscaper, I thought this was a good introduction. Here ‘tis:
Oh the Russians they stomp on the tables
And Annie, she stomps on Green Gables
And Aesop, he stomped on some fables,
But the Lobdells, they stomp in a hole.
Oh, they stomp on hot coals in Calcutta;
In a mosh pit they stomp on each otha
But to plant just one tree or anotha
You will sure have to stomp in a hole.
You must stomp in a hole for a poplar
You must stomp in a hole for an oak
If you think a shovel
Can handle the trouble
Then I’d like to know what you smoke.
So jump in! Use your feet!
I wish I could say it’s a treat!
Oh… (back to top, ad nauseam…)
